Make do and mend

It's been raining and chilly here in southern California.  I wish I could say I've been busy sewing something fancy since my last post but the truth is I haven't sewn squat. What I have been doing is surfing the web and drinking a lot of tea. I blame the rain. So what have I done all week? In the spirit of  'Make do and mend' I have been spending my time obsessing on how I can re-decorate our computer room with A) what I already have that I can alter OR B) what I can thrift for next to nothing. In fabulous mid century style of coarse.

I made these two nifty wall shelves using left over cedar wood I had from one of the raised planting beds. This particular bed called for a bottom shelf that we did not need so we skipped that step resulting in extra wood. This shelf is now behind the tiki bar in the dining room. The leopard backing is just scrap fabric I duct taped to cardboard. Fancy, eh?

This one I made to hold my husbands collection of horror toys in the computer room. The 'spikes' actually came with two of the figures and are simply hot glued on. It's kinda-sorta mid century looking which is what I was going for.

So back to the room in question. It's currently a hot mess so there will be no pictures. I won't babble too much about it since it is a work in progress. So far I have taken down and boxed up all the old decor and made new curtains out of this nice red Hawaiian print fabric. Now I have the biggest challange of transforming all my black furniture into blond furniture to complete my new design idea. Nothing in here is vintage or valuable so I may just paint everything into a nice shade of 'faux birch' or even consider covering the table tops with 'light oak' contact paper. Tacky, I know. But I just happen to have two rolls of light oak contact paper leftover from when I covered my kitchen cabinets last week. So there you go. I will post more as soon as this room re-do progresses.

Good luck with your room! I have a room like that my office/sewing room, it's all modern furniture but I like to give it some vintage touches. I also don't have loads of cash to invest so constantly trying to be inventive!! I love the shelves you made, awesome!
