McCalls 6383 1940s dress in black and yellow dots

Last night after dinner I decided I would get a head start on my February 'Make a Month' project.  I choose McCalls 6383, a cute 1940s dress from my pattern stash with a detachable peplum.

I promised myself I would only cut the dress out since I am already wrapped up in another sewing project I need to get finished asap. But once I got started I couldn't stop! Before you know it 5 hours whizzed by and I was almost done with it. By then it was 4am and I was beat so I put it away until this morning when I got right to finishing it up. Here it is!

As always, I had to make changes. First thing I did was shorten up the shoulder seams. This dress called for big 40s shoulder pads and had a lot of extra fabric for them. Since I am not a fan of giant shoulders I shortened them a bit. The second change I made was I gathered the shoulder seams. While the waist on this one fit me fine, the bust was huge! Adding the gathered helped conture it to my body better, plus I think it just looks better.

Third change was I decided to omit the neck ruffle plus I lowered the front neck line by about 1 1/2 inches. Doing so created a gap at the neckline which I fixed by adding two open darts. A spure of the moment quick fix but I think it turned out really cool looking since I had made them meet with the bust darts. It looks like it was meant to be that way and it gives the dress more visual interest.

I trimmed the peplum belt with a beaded black organza ruffle and added a matching sequins bow to top it off. You can't tell from the pictures but it's really sparkly!

The back view, and here it is on me.....

Ta-da!

Absolutely gorgeous, I love it and it looks fantastic on you. The neck darts meeting the bust darts works brilliantly too. x
