Some may remember I started a total make over of my bedroom last year on virtually no budget. The wall color and furniture of coarse had to stay but everything else I revamped with what I had and a few new things I picked up over time. The biggest change to the room is the duvet cover I made using nothing more than sewing room scraps.
I used vintage barkcloth I bought from Etsy that I had sitting in my stash for over a year as my base. Then I pieced brown flannel scraps leftover from a quilt project, yellow velvet leftover from a dress project and butter yellow satin that used to be a dress liner! In between each section I added vintage beige lace which came off a bolt of trim bought at a flea market. The pillow cases are also made from scraps. I didn't have enough of either fabric to make them a solid color so I made them two tone. I really love how they turned out and now want all my pillow cases to be two tone!
The back of the duvet is made out of an old bed sheet sewn to 8" wide edge pieces of a plain white knit jersey I had on hand. (The sheet wasn't wide enough, I needed the jersey to widen it.)
I had enough of the barkcloth to make two pillows I piped them in leopard print cord. These usually go in the living room where I have a lot of leopard print going on. The 'curtain' behind the bed in somewhat new to me antique late Victorian hand embroidered piano shawl I bought off of Etsy. It's done in the softest pastel colors on a cream background.
A close up of the barkcloth. Not sure why it wanted to photograph so green in the other pictures but up close it's pale gray with metallic gold, black and red.
And the Tretchikoff print? It's a big fat fake. I want a real deal vintage version of this print SO BAD but I can't find one for a price I can manage so this cheaky one I printed up and pasted together will have to do for now. The vintage Asian wall plaques and ginormous wall fan are new to me both from Ebay.
I have four comforters total that needed covers and this is the first one I finished. Three more to go! Now I just need to decide what color scheme to go with. I don't think I have enough scraps to make another one here at the house but I will in time. I am thinking I want to make one using an already made vintage quilt topper as the base if I can find one for a good price. This project was fun to do and fairly quick and easy. If you can take take accurate measurements and sew a strait stitch, any one can do this.
