My next sewing project - New York Pattern 1585

It's been a while since my last sewing project. To be honest I really have not been all that inspired in the sewing room lately. I already have so many lovely dresses made from vintage patterns I wear regularly that I have not felt the need to make anything new.

But then I found this. New York Patterns 1585 from around 1955. It's the pointed button over detail at the bust and the pocket detail that caught my eye. I actually had this pattern 'Favorited' on Etsy for months before I bought it. I liked the look of it but cool detail aside I thought I might find something I like better.

I did. But it wasn't a pattern, it was an actual similar vintage dress! Here is the dress:

This vintage dress is for sale right now over at Small Earth Vintage on Etsy. (One of my favorite vintage sellers. Go check out their wonderful selection!) Oh how I love it. But it's way too small for me so it just wasn't meant to be. Getting back to the point, I plan on making a similar version using the pattern above. The triangle button over on the bust of the pattern is not as defined as the dress here so I will have to alter that. But the shape of the dress is right on the money. I'll also have to draft up a contrast facing to get the same effect around the neckline but that is easy to do. I ordered the fabric I am going to use to make my version yesterday. It's an olive green and black 'crosshatch' design cotton. Sort of plain but it has a 50s look to it I like. I plan on doing the contrast neck, button and pocket trim in white.

Oddly enough I found a second pattern for sale on Etsy with the same pointy button over detail that I adore:

Simplicity 4263, what a stunner! This one is for sale on Etsy by Sydcam123. Funny how you run into similar things like that once you have them on the mind. I'll post pictures of my progress as soon as I get started on the project.

Love that style, anything with a bit of detail is great. Sadly I always have to alter the bust area of patterns as I'm larger in that area and these are so difficult to alter for someone as lazy as me, so I never get to make anything like this.

Straight Talking Mama- Yep, me too. I also always have to alter the busts of patterns. It's no fun but the pay off of having a perfect fitting dress from a vintage pattern is so worth the fuss. :)
