Advance 6432 - Mid 1950s halter dress

When I was on hiatus from my blog earlier this year I did manage to sew a few dresses from vintage patterns that I have yet to write about. One of them was Advance 6432, a mid 1950s halter dress. I actually hunted this pattern down for ages before I found a copy that I could afford. 50s halter patterns usually go for quite a lot on Ebay. This one was exactly what I was looking for.

I made my version out of what fabric I had on hand at the time. Scraps really since I had to patch two fabrics together to make the dress long enough at the hem.  I choose a black and white striped cotton twill, a black self striped sateen and red ribbon and lace to contrast. It has a nautical feel to it.

I added the red ribbon originally to hide the unsightly center front seam on the skirt. Then I felt it needed more and just went with it.

I knew I would have to make size and length adjustment to this pattern as it was a size too big for me. But even then this one was a poor fit. I should have made a muslin for this first as the torso ended up being mega MEGA long, over 6" too long for me! I managed to pull a lot of the length out of the halter neck but the bust line still falls way to low on me. Looks good on my dress form though, heh.

While I like the over all look of this dress I hate the fit. The fit issues were just too many on this pattern so I call it a fail. Would I use this pattern again? Maybe, but I would have to re-draft the whole bodice from scratch with my slopers. This one would be much better suited as is for a very, very tall girl with a loooong torso.

Gorgeous dress! I love the contrasting fabrics, and the red lace on the skirt. Shame it doesn't fit though. :-( Can you convert it into a top and skirt or similar instead?

What a shame it doesn't fit it's lovely! I do know what you mean though, I never ever make a muslin but I often have to take things apart and remake them again, you think I would learn *sign*

Oh that's an awful story because it looks so adorable on the form!
