And here is a picture of my late great aunt Bubba standing next to her brother wearing a similar dress. The pattern is dated 1939 and this picture is also dated 1939 on the back. She is my aunt on my Moms Moms side and these pictures will all have been taken in east Texas.
Her real name was Eunice but everyone called her Bubba. She was the wife to the famed Rockabilly country star Moon Mullican. I like how she wears this with a bow tied ribbon belt. I also wear mine this way. The picture is blurry as many are from this time period but the dress print looks to be a large floral or paisley on a light colored background. I wonder what color her dress was? Here is another picture of her in the dress:

To her left in the overalls is her sister- my great grandma- Erma. I am now on a mission to re-make a version of the same overalls Erma is wearing in this picture but that will have to be another post! The other gals in the picture (I think) are of their brothers wives/girlfriends. Lovely dresses on all of them!
Here is my version. I made it out of a dark blue-purple cotton sateen with a very 40's inspired bow and heart print all over. I added red piping to the armholes and just like my other late 30's frock I made I piped the center front panel to accentuate the art deco details. I wore it with a red ribbon in my hair, a red ribbon belt, a red vintage 50's slip, a few bakelite bracelets and my red Fluevog Listen Up! Stacy heels.
The pattern called for very puffed sleeves but I decided to omit them. Don't get me wrong, I love 30's puffed sleeves but I just made a similar dress last month and decided I wanted this to be different. Of coarse after seeing the pictures above of Bubbas frock with the sleeves I sorta want to add them on now. Should I add them on?
A close up of the details:
I am now on a mission to find a 1930's ladies overalls pattern. So far I have had no luck finding an original vintage pattern from this time on either Ebay or Etsy. I know there are a few repro patterns out there I could use but I may end up drafting my own. I have no idea if my great grandmas overalls were store bought or self made but I want mine to be as close to possible to hers. Considering the hard times of the depression years the pictures were taken hers could have even been older from the late 1920's. Any suggestions?
Just for fun here is a picture of the sisters Erma and Bubba later in life circa the mid 50's. My great Gran Erma on the left and her sister Bubba on the right. I especially love the purple (or brown maybe?) gingham dress! I may have to also re-create that....

I like the no sleeve version - you did a great job! Since I last commented, I began sewing lessons - and have now made myself a total of three dresses and a skirt! Its bloggers like you who inspire me to make more things :)

Her frock is gorgeous, and I love your version. The piping is a splendid touch!
You could maybe make a little bolero with puff sleeves in the same fabric??X

I like it sleeveless, I love the detail in the front panel too. I must dig out some old family photos for you, British fashion was so different from US fashin back then.
